Kohaku vs Sanke vs Showa: What Is the Difference?

Educational guide · References and further reading below. Seek qualified advice for fish-health decisions.

Kohaku, Sanke and Showa form the celebrated Gosanke group. Their base colour and placement of black sumi create very different impressions.

Kohaku: red on white

Kohaku has a white body with red hi pattern and no black markings. Its appeal comes from clean white skin, rich and even red, and a pattern that balances from head to tail.

Sanke: white, red and restrained black

Taisho Sanke begins with a white base and red pattern, then adds black sumi accents. Sumi commonly appears as separate stepping-stone markings; traditional appreciation generally favours a head without black.

Showa: powerful black wrapping the body

Showa is traditionally understood as a black-based koi with white and red pattern. Black often wraps around the body and may appear on the head. Motoguro—black at the base of the pectoral fins—can add power.

Young koi change as they grow, especially the development of sumi. Choose the complete fish—body, skin, balance and movement—not one isolated marking.

  • Kohaku: white and red only.
  • Sanke: white base with smaller black accents.
  • Showa: bold black that may wrap the body and enter the head.
